Juneteenth Celebration: Drum Circle at Governor’s Island

Juneteenth Celebration: Drum Circle & Moving Chains at Governor’s Island

Free class, no sign up needed. Just show up!

In celebration of Juneteenth and in reverence to the lives lost and those who survived the Middle Passage Vado Diamonde will lead a drum circle on, June 19th, 2023, from 12-12:45pm at the entry of Charles Gaines’ Moving Chains kinetic sculpture on Governors Island. This incredible celebration is going to be followed by a drum class with Vado at the Cumbe house located at 405 Colonel’s Row.

Vado is the keeper of the Mahouka peoples traditions of Cote D'Ivoire. The African Drum Circle tradition  is a testament to the enduring legacy of rhythm and community in African cultures on the continent, diaspora and Indigenous peoples worldwide. Representing a celebration of shared humanity, where people come together to create rhythms, forge connections, and be in the transcendent power of music. Whether it is in the heart of an African village or in a bustling city halfway across the globe the power of the drum reconnects us to our ancestors and descendants, our past, present and future.

Join The Cumbe Family this Juneteenth as we unite through the power of Ase’ to uplift us all.
