Quenia’s class explores various forms of Samba, rhythms born in Rio De Janeiro and Bahia: Samba No Pé, Miudinho, Samba Reggae, to Samba Afro and more. Quenia dives deep into her own cultural heritage and introduces Afro-Brazilian dances originating from Angola, Congo, Benin and Nigeria. Quenia Ribeiro is a dancer, choreographer and dance instructor from colorful Rio de Janeiro with more than 25 years of dance experience. She’s a proud cultural ambassador and has performed Samba and Afro-Brazilian dance all over the world. Her studies and experience extend from Ballet and Samba of Rio De Janeiro, to the roots of Samba through Afro-Brazilian Folkloric dance and Orixa movements rooted in Africa. She’s been featured in interviews, performances and TV broadcasts. Quenia has been conducting Samba and Afro-Brazilian dance workshops in NYC since 1997. She has worked extensively in the public and private school system with children and teens teaching Brazilian dance and creative movement in both NYC and Brazil. Quenia became the first and only Brazilian teacher to implement Samba and Afro-Brazilian dances at the Ailey Extension in NYC and taught there for 14 years. Her series of four instructional DVDs has broadened her reputation as an innovative leader in the field of Brazilian Dance. Quenia currently choreographs and directs her own dance company, “Grupo Ribeiro” and continues to share her passion and love for dance and her Brazilian heritage.
