Friday May 17th Schedule
6 pm: Afro Caribbean Dance w/Persephone DaCosta
Students will engage the basics of Afro-Caribbean dance set to propulsive music that will ensure a fun and lively experience.
7:30pm Ivorian Rhythms w/ Vado Diomande
Students will deepen their understanding of what it means to drum rhythms that are used in West African dance. Drum breaks will be highlighted as participants play alongside dancers who will be modeling the footwork of traditional Ivorian dance.
7:30 pm: Guinean Dance w/Mouminatou Camara
Students will be guided through the mechanics of Guinean dance and encouraged and celebrate the form through choreography.
Saturday May 18 Schedule
12 pm: Ivorian Rhythms w/Boubacar Diabate
Students will gain greater awareness of the hand placement used to produce the notes of the djembe drum - Tone, Slap & Bass!
12 pm: Senegalese Djembe Dance w/Maguette Camara
Students will be guided through a variety of Senegalese steps that will blend into choreography to be performed in class.
2 pm: Ivorian Rhythms w/TraBi Lizie
Students will be guided through foundational Ivorian drumming while learning how to maintain distinctive parts of the polyrhythms that drive West African percussion
2 pm: Ivorian Dance w/Vado Diomande
Students will gain greater awareness of the hand placement used to produce the notes of the djembe drum - Tone, Slap & Bass!
4 pm: Guinean Rhythms w/M’Bemba Bangoura
Students will be introduced to traditional Guinean drum rhythms and experiment with improvisation
4 pm: Sabar Dance w/Babacar M’Baye
Originating from Senegal, Sabar is often referred to as the national pulse of Senegal. It is known for its rhythmic complexity and sophistication in both movement and music. With its light-footed roots, elegance and ecstatic rhythms, Sabar is one of the most challenging dances to learn. The unconventional rhythms of the sabar drum inspire swift shifts of balance while maintaining a cool demeanor.

Founded in 1989, Kotchegna Dance Company is a mutli-ethnic dance corps based in NYC specializing in the dance and drum traditions of Cote D’Ivoire, West Africa. Meaning messenger in Mahou, a dialect of the Ivory Coast and the native language of the company director, Vado Diomande, Kotchegna seeks to impart the village traditions of over 60 different ethnic groups comprising the country through performance and teaching. Featuring dances and rhythms choreographed by Vado, formerly a principal dancer with the Ballet National de Cote D’Ivoire, the rich diversity of West African culture and Ivory Coast are amplified and available to all.
