West African Drumming
Explore the heart of all West African musical traditions which are rooted in the strong, powerful sounds of the drum. Learn to play the many parts of djembe, doundoun, songbas and kenkenes with Vado Diomande, life-long drummer, drum-maker and repairer.
With West African Drumming you will learn to combine the vibrant beats of the drum with rhythmic movements of the dancer by signaling them to make changes in their movements from one step to another through music. You will navigate their thrilling changes by having them follow the lead djembe and its signals. As your learning deepens, you will move up to more complex rhythm lines, and more syncopated dance rhythms. Drum classes have students at many levels of proficiency, with accompaniment lines to Kookoo, Bademalon, Temate, Katana, Bolohi, N'Goron and more, challenging learning at all levels.
