Join Shakara.NYC, a fitness movement and class rooted in Afrobeat culture! You’ll learn the basics of Afrobeat dance through movements anchored in traditional dance from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Shakara means pride and in Shakara.NYC, Eka Take will help dancers of all levels reignite their fire by focusing on something that they are proud of and expressing that pride through dance. Classes begin with #ShakaraSomething a warm up routine to improve flexibility, strengthen the core and stamina to enable students flow into Afrobeat movements fluidly. In the second part of the class, Eka will use the Shakara approach to guide your execution of the movements and commitment to expressing your you. For the remainder of class Eka will guide you through her other unique routines like #ShakaraShakara, #ShakaraStone, #ShakaraSisi.
Eka founded Shakara.NYC after moving to Brooklyn, New York to include elements of her West African culture into her daily wellness activities. Eka is Nigerian born and raised. She began her dance career in Calabar, Nigeria at a very young age practicing various traditional Efik, Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa dance styles including Ekombi, Atilogwu, Bata and Bankuara. She is also trained in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Modern dance. Eka currently teaches at the Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA and the Fit In Bed-Stuy. She has participated in events curated by organizations including New York Road Runners (NYRR), Tompkins Avenue Merchants Association (TAMA), NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
