About the instructor:  Carlos Mateu, born and raised in Havana, Cuba, has been inspired by a rich culture of art and music since childhood. His great grandfather was Obdulio Villa (nicknamed Pabellón), pioneer of Jazz and Cuban music in Austria and one of the most famous saxophonists of the 1920s.  Carlos learned to dance to traditional Cuban music from his grandparents. In New York, Carlos has danced with a number of local dance groups including Team Timba, Areytos Performance Group and The Roots of Salsa. Carlos has taught dance and musicology workshops at several venues and schools including American Museum of Natural History, Alvin Ailey, and with Oyu Oro Afro Cuban Experimental Dance Ensemble.
