Cumbe Celebrates PRIDE!

Special workshop and celebrations during Pride Weekend!

Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance is so excited to be hosting some very special programming this New York City Pride weekend with a special workshop and celebration, along with an immersive showcase with the elders of GRIOT Circle, Inc.

Plus, we’ll be changing our logo to reflect the love, dedication and sacrifice of those who work and continue to advocate for change.

Thanks to the generous support of the New York Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, Cumbe has helped elevate the elders of our community at the GRIOT Circle, Inc. with a series of African and African Diaspora dance classes including Afro-Cuban, West African and Stepping styles. And on Friday, June 28, GRIOT seniors will be showcasing their talent with choreographed pieces. It’s not just a showcase, but it’s also a party! We’ll be welcoming back DJ THECAINMARKO to provide the sounds and sharing refreshments. The event is FREE and is from 3:00-6:00pm.

On Sunday, June 30, at 2:00-5:00pm, we’ll be celebrating with a culturally immersive dance workshop with dynamic priest and teaching artist Tony Domenech. This PRIDE Dance Workshop and Celebration will highlight the PRIDE within Afro-Cuban spiritual practices, along with teaching the staple movements of many of the deities of the Yoruba religion. This workshop will conclude with a fabulous performance from Milteri Tucker and her Bomba students, along with music and refreshments for all.

All levels of dance welcome to visit and experience Cumbe. Please see website for workshop pricing.

We look forward to seeing you there!
