Project Description

Danielle Lima

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Danielle started dancing at the age of seven at the Dance School Centro de Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There she studied ballet, jazz, tap, modern, national, and international folkloric dance. She also performed with G.R.E.S. Beija-Flor, the largest samba school in Rio, for several years. Danielle appeared in numerous television shows in Brazil such as Xuxa and Domingao do Faustao. In 1998, she performed contemporary pieces in the Opera O Guarani with The Rio Dance Company. She was also committed to maintaining her cultural roots and continued performing traditional folkloric dance with Rodry Baiano Dance Group, where she was lead dancer. In 2000, Danielle joined the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, where she worked with Choreographer Tony Stevens for over three years. After she relocated to New York City, she taught ethnic dance workshops at the Harlem YMCA and joined Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre as a teacher of Brazilian Samba in early 2004. Danielle’s creative approach to teaching includes a mixture of fitness and traditional and contemporary samba choreography from Rio and Bahia. In 2005, she founded the Brasileirando Dance Group, a company that focuses on disseminating Brazilian folkloric and contemporary dances. Brasileirando has performed at Lincoln Center, the Socrates Park 20th Anniversary, SOHO’s Art Parade in New York City, and at the Dance Conference in Saint Louis. Danielle Lima is also a certified teaching artist in American Ballroom Theater’s “Dancing Classrooms” program and a certified yoga instructor at YOGA Effects in New York City.
