December 15, 2015

Dear Students,

We have some important news to share with you:

We are discontinuing classes at our PCA location in 2016

* The last day for classes at PCA will be Tuesday, December 29.* We’ve heard your feedback about the space and tried to adapt it to better fit our needs, but have been limited in what we can do. Since we want your dancing experience with us to be the best possible, we are stopping our classes at PCA.

We will have news about our New Home in 2016

The good news is that we will know where our new home is soon, and are excited to move forward and rebuild our community in a long-term location. So stay tuned for a big announcement in the New Year!

Classes at Gibney Dance and Brooklyn Ballet are still continuing!

We’re grateful for our partnerships with both of these studios, and students and teachers have been enjoying dancing in their beautiful spaces. So if you haven’t yet gone, we encourage you to keep dancing with us in these two locations – adult classes are at Gibney Dance and children’s classes are at Brooklyn Ballet.

Watch out for our Special Workshops & Events . . .

We’re cooking up some exciting events for you in 2016, like Sabar workshops with Ousmane Sall in January .

Stay tuned to our e-blast and website for more news.

*Please note: All Cumbe class cards and New Student introductory offers (3 classes for $24) that were bought at PCA will be honored for 6 months, starting from the day that our classes begin in a new location.

September 4, 2015

Dear Cumbe students,

Classes start again on Monday, September 14 and we are thrilled to welcome our community back. Our wonderful faculty is ready to get you dancing!

We’ll be holding Adult classes in two new locations:

  • MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Almost all of our classes will be at PCA (Professional Center for the Arts) in their new studio in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Lamine Thiam’s West African class will continue on Tuesdays at Gibney Dance.
  • SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS: All classes will be at Gibney Dance in Lower Manhattan (near City Hall).

We thank PCA and Gibney for welcoming Cumbe into their spaces and their communities!

Our classes for Children Ages 1 to 4 will be continuing at Brooklyn Ballet on Mondays and Fridays.

We thank Brooklyn Ballet for being an ongoing partner.

Yes, our adult classes are leaving downtown Brooklyn (for now, at least) and that was a tough decision.  But we are very enthusiastic about our two new interim spaces:

PCA is a new, street-level dance studio that’s in a great area, and we know many of you live in Bed-Stuy and the surrounding neighborhoods. It’s only a block from the A/C Nostrand Avenue station, so those outside of Brooklyn can take advantage of the express A train.

Gibney Dance is a newly renovated studio with full amenities that is convenient for folks throughout NYC and beyond: it’s only a 1/2 block from the 4/5 Brooklyn Bridge stop, and within 2 blocks of the R, A, C, 2, 3, J, Z trains. Being at Gibney is also a great opportunity to introduce Cumbe to a different community of dancers, while offering Cumbe students access to a range of contemporary dance styles.  We’re excited about the possibilities this new partnership opens up.

*An important note about purchasing classes at our two locations*

Paying for classes occurring at our PCA location will be the same as before – you can buy single classes or class cards in advance at www.cumbedance.com or in person at PCA before class. For classes occurring at Gibney, you must pay on Gibney’s website at www.gibneydance.org or in person at Gibney. This means that Cumbe class cards will only be valid at our PCA location, and Gibney class cards will only be valid at our Gibney location. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience.

I am sure you have a lot of questions about these locations and about Cumbe’s search for a permanent new home, so we’ve prepared this FAQ pageLet us know if you have more questions and we’ll be sure to answer them!

With DEEP appreciation for your ongoing support,

Jimena Martinez
